Filmmakers: Erika Calmayer, Jakob Skøyen, Kyrre Lien, Martin Flatmoen, Christer Eckermann, Anders Bergh and Stian Thorvaldsen (www.kyrrelien.com and ecker00.deviantart.com)
Pro or amateur: Amateur, High School Students
Synopsis: A short film about a guy getting drunk and inviting a guy to move in with him. He later regrets this and try to get him out
Production equipment used: It is shot with the new Canon EOS 5d mkII along with lenses like 50mm f/1.2, 24mm f/1.4, 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8. We also used KinoFlo, homemade dolly, and recorded the sound with External audio
Editing software: FinalCut Pro, After Effects, Automaticduck and Compressor
Editing hardware: MacPro 2008, 2,8Ghz, 10GB RAM, 2TB
Editing Workflow: While editing we used proxies that was compressed and scaled 33% of original size (640×360) with Apple pixlet codec, which made it a lot faster to render. Later all proxies was replaced with the original files when moving on from FCP to AfterEffects (where we used Automatic Duck to export the timeline to AfterEffects so it was all editable). For the final render we used Apple Animation and later Compressor to make it into all different kinds of format, the current one is QuickTime H.264 1080p
Favorite shot or clip in this film: The beer shot or the overhead shot over the bed
Tip for 5d MkII filmmakers: Always have a extra battery charging so that you can replace this with the empty one. Always have memory cards so that you don’t have to stop filming , and always have a workstation where you’re filming so you can easily transfer the clips and backup with an external drive at the same time. We used a lot of time to trick the cameras exposure both with duck-tape on the contacts as well as locking the exposure so that the aperture didn’t move. We also had some problems with the h.264 compression that killed a lot of detail in the blacks. We had to overexpose some of the shots and drag the exposure down in post-prod to get the details that we wanted in the blacks

Hi Hobbes and Drake.
Thanks for the comments. Yes, we are on the last year on High school. This short-film is nominated in three categories in the largest youth film festival here in Norway.

Really great. Thanks for the details on overcoming the 5D’s ineptness. Come on Canon. Throw us a bone!

well done! Shorts are one of the hardest forms to do well, but you told a great story and created great characters with a good pay off in the end, despite being predictable.

Love it. Great story, the fact that it was shot on a dslr doesn’t even matter. Really nice work.

Brilliant stuff guys. I’ve been trying to decide what Canon to go for and seeing what you created has helped a lot. Hope you win the festival.
