Favorite shot or clip in this film: The in car shot on 14mm beside driver Andy McKenna. I’ve sat beside plenty of quick drivers over the years, but Andy is the the fastest, the most creative and treats his driving with the same passion as a photographer does his images. Always a laugh. He’s grinning at one point - that’s because we’ve run out of opposite lock, so not sure if it’s about to spin out…

Tip for 5d MkII filmmakers:
1. Watch as many of the online videos that cover the basics of controlling aperture as you can. Tyler Ginther’s guide on Vimeo is a good start
2. If you’re a stills shooter moving to video, learn to ’shoot for the edit’ and create points in your footage with the edit in mind that make smoother cuts. And get a really heavy set of ’sticks’, you’ll need it
3. If you’re going to struggle to control focus and there’s plenty of light, use a wide angle and get in close, as DOF is less critical, or if on a telephoto and panning, just let it go to f22 and select a focus point that gives the DOF you need
3. Canon say it’s not a video camera, it’s a DSLR with video capability. True, but for some shoots, it’s actually the best tool for the job. The handheld in-car I shot was a lot easier due to the light weight

Fantastic video and enjoyable to watch. Incorporates lots of different shoots and gives you the feeling that you are in the car at times.

  2. Jean Fox. What a brilliant piece of driving with such control. Felt I was inside the car with the driver. Says:

What a brilliant piece of driving. Totally controlled. Felt as though I was inside the car with driver.

  3. Katja Nyqvist Says:

Well edited and a good piece of music to it, creating a feeling of wanting to drive a car yourself and get that amazing experience..

Beauty piece of shooting and driving.
Must say that BMW looked to be a “ti ” or “compact” as they say in europe and not an M3… but trivia …used to Pro Rally BMWs in USA and built very similar car.
Nasty in the snow. Without the nice studded Michlin C-5s
Look forward to lots of great still and video with this wonder camera…
    Shiny side up.

Thanks, Anon. You’re right about the spec, but it’s difficult to describe the car / engine / transmission. You’re into rallying, so here’s the spec:

It’s basically a Compact shell, seam welded, welded in custom cage, hard lined brake lines, fire supression etc
    Engine is M3 Evo 320Bhp.
    Transmission is standard M3 gearbox
Final drive is a plate differential, with a short final drive giving top speed of 120mph.
    Recaro’s 5 point belts etc

A real handfull, as you say. Mr McKenna loves it….. Stand by for more videos soon at my new site of http://www.rallydriver.net

  6. Neill Watson Says:

    Hi Anon,

The car is a Compact Ti body shell. As you’re into rallying, here’s the spec:

Seam welded shell with welded in custom cage
Recaro seats with 5 point harnesses
    3.2 M3 Evo spec engine, 320 Bhp
5 speed M3 gearbox with short finla drive and plate differential
Great fun on ice, runs on World Rally ice tyres, but still a real handful as you can see….
