The Road to Recovery from David Stephenson on Vimeo.

Filmmaker: David Stephenson
Pro or amateur:
Professional photojournalist at the Lexington Herald-Leader in Lexington, Ky
Shoot location:
Western Kentucky
Production equipment used:
I used the 5D Mark II, of course. Lenses were 24-105 f/4 IS, 300 f/2.8, 1.4 teleconverter. The Sennheiser mini shotgun MKE 400 was used for all of the location audio. I used a tripod that was way too big for this camera, but it’s left over from my video camera days
Editing software:
I used FCP 6.0.5
Editing workflow: I edited in the native h.264. I exported to Quicktime Movie using the Apple Pro Res 422 1920 x 1080 60i codec. I used that master file to export back to h.264 using the Vimeo recommended settings. I also used that master file and used On2Flix Standard to convert to flv for the newspaper’s website
My favorite shot or clip in this film: My favorite shots in the film are of the power plant, the house with the storm clouds over it, and the porch swing. My most favorite is probably of the trailer shot through the car window during the rain storm. I loved the mood and feeling of that shot and the 5D Mark II allowed me to use a shallow depth of field making the rain drops on the window out of focus
